366 Days at the Drive-In: Day 340

The Date: September 4
The Movie: Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933)
What Is It?: Cuckoo collaboration between Mervyn LeRoy and surreal choreographer Busby Berkley kicks the depression out of the Great Depression. Ruby Keeler, Joan Blondell, Ginger Rogers, and Aline MacMahon are the title diggers and hoofers, and they’re top-notch, but this is Berkley’s picture. The movie kills every time he unleashes his dancers to create some sort of deliciously garish tableaux.
Why Today?: On this day in 1929, the stock market commences its plummet leading up to the Oct 29th crash that caused the Great Depression.
